Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) is an Aboriginal political organization that represents 49 First Nation communities within the territory of James Bay Treaty 9 and the Ontario portions of Treaty 5. NAN territory covers two-thirds of Ontario and spans 210,000 square miles. The approximate population of NAN is 45,000 members. The people of Nishnawbe Aski traditionally speak Ojibway, Cree, and Ojicree.
Nishnawbe Aski Nation (known as Grand Council Treaty 9 until 1983) was established in 1973 as the regional organization representing the political, social and economic interests of the people of Northern Ontario. In 1977, Grand Council Treaty 9 made a public declaration of the rights and principles of Nishnawbe Aski. NAN's four member elected Executive Council together with individual NAN First Nation Chiefs, advocate on behalf of the people and communities of Nishnawbe Aski to ensure a better quality of life.
Fonds comprises material relating to the activities of Nishawbe Aski Nation. Fonds includes correspondence, documents, resources, and other material. Fonds also includes photographs collected by NAN relating to a number of residential schools.

The Cecilia Indian Residential School operated in Kenora, Ontario, Treaty 3 Territory from 1902 to 1974. From 1902-1929 the school was affiliated with the Presbyterian Church of Canada and was located on the Shoal Lake Indian Reserve. From 1929-1974 the was located at Round Lake, Northeast of Kenora, Ontario.
The school was named in memory of a member of the Women's Missionary Society, who had worked as the secretary of Indian work in the northwest.

St. Joseph's Residential School in Fort William, Ontario was open from 1870-1966, it was affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church and was operated by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Sault Ste Marie. The school was originally established as "The Orphan Asylum of Fort William" and was exclusively for girls.
The original school was located on Fort William Indian Reserve, in 1907 the school moved to Franklin Street, Fort William. The school operated in conjunction with the orphanage run by the Sisters, both the orphanage and school were demolished in 1966.
