Kane, Paul, 1810-1871

Paul Kane (September 3, 1810 – February 20, 1871) was an Irish-born Canadian painter, famous for his paintings of First Nations peoples in the Canadian West and other Native Americans in the Oregon Country. Paul Kane’s artwork is among the earliest record of life in the Northwest before white settlement. His romantic oil paintings alonginfluenced perceptions of North American Aboriginal people into the 20th century. Today his pictures of early native life are used to illustrate history in books, films and at historic sites.
