History Biographical:

St. John the Divine Anglican Church (Byng Inlet, Ont.) is makes up the St. John the Divine Anglican Parish (Byng Inlet, Ont.)

The Bishop of Algoma visited the Byng Inlet area in 1901, which was mostly comprised of lumber camps. This visit was a precursor to the formation of a mission and Mr. Westman, a student, was sent in the summer of 1902. By June 1909 the church was built; the Bishop officiated the opening ceremony on June 27, 1909. A short time later the church and cemetery were consecrated on August 25, 1912. From St. John the Divine's construction, the church and parish maintained a self-supporting status, but in 1926 the church recognized the difficulty of maintaining this as the lumbering activity decreased. In September 1930, the Bishop of Algoma paid a visit that was thought to be the final episcopal visit. The lumber company finished operations in Byng Inlet and the church was expected to be closed shortly afterwards.
