History Biographical: 

Portrait of George LeachGeorge Leach (1925-1986) was born in Ottawa, Ontario. He studied general arts at the University of Toronto. He served in World War II as a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force. He later worked at the adult Education Centre in Sudbury and as an English teacher at Cambrian College in Sault Ste. Marie. 

Leach served as Athletics Director at Algoma University College from 1972 until 1986. George, who was dedicated to Algoma U students and their success, pioneered Algoma U's athletic program and promoted the philosophy that everyone should be encouraged to participate in athletics. Leach contributed to the development of an Algoma Unviersity College fitness trail being built to the east of Shingwauk Hall and a baseball field being developed to the west (where the AU residences currently stand). In 1984 Leach oversaw the development of the AUC Resource Centre for Fitness and Athletics, a small space which included fitness equiment, fitness testing, and counselling.

Leach suffered a heart attack and passed away on May 22, 1986. Algoma University's athletic facility, the George Leach Centre, is named after him.

Fonds comprises records that document the activities of George Leach as Algoma University College's athletic director, trainer, and varsity coach.  Fonds includes memoranda, college crests, stickers, a medal, records of the Northeastern Ontario Regional Sports Committee (NEORSC), records of the Action Sport committee (municipal sports committee), fitness training, memos to faculty, records of Leach's involvement and coaching of AUC's varsity hockey team, and other AUC branded paraphernalia.
