History Biographical: 

The Senate is responsible for the educational policy of the University, and, with the approval of the Board in so far as the expenditure of funds and establishment of facilities are concerned, may create faculties, schools, institutes, departments, chairs or courses of instruction within the University, may create faculty councils to act as committees which may recommend to the Senate regulations respecting the admission of the students, courses of study and requirements for graduation, may pass by-laws, resolutions and regulations in respect of matters in this section referred to, and may from time to time amend or replace any of its by-laws, resolutions and regulations, and, without limiting the generality of the foregoing, the Senate has power,

to conduct examinations and appoint examiners;

 to deal with matters that arise in connection with the award of fellowships, scholarships, medals, prizes and other awards;

to confer degrees of Bachelor, Master and Doctor in the several arts, sciences and faculties and all other degrees that may appropriately be conferred by a university, except degrees in Theology;

 to confer honorary degrees with the concurrence of the Board. 1961-62, c. 154, s. 4, part.
