History Biographical:

Anglican services have been continuously held in what is now Blind River, Ontario since 1894.  The first Anglican services in the area were held around present day Algoma Mills as early as 1880 and conducted by priests from Sudbury and other nearby areas. In the early days of the parish, the Anglican mission at Blind River covered stations at Blind River, Algoma Mills, Spragge (formerly Cook's Mills), Cutler, and Dear Lake and the surrounding countryside.

There has been an Anglican priest in Blind River since 1893, and “The Church of Our Holy Saviour” was built in 1902 and consecrated by Bishop Thorneloe in 1903.  Like many churches of its name, “The Church of Our Holy Saviour” has been abbreviated through the years to “St. Saviour's”.  At the time of construction, this church cost a total of $1500, mostly raised and collected by the women of the parish.

History Biographical:

St. Paul's Anglican Church (Spragge, Ont.) is part of the multi-point St. Saviour's Anglican Parish (Blind River, Ont.).

The Spragge area was small and the community did not follow one single religion. When Rev. R.J. Hay took charge in 1900, he re-established regular Anglican services and had the Union Sunday school converted to an Anglican; his wife took over the education of the children.

Those who have ministered at Spragge include: Rev. T.J. Hay (1900-?), Rev. F.H. Hinks (1906-?).

In 1977 renovations were undertaken on the church structure and a parish hall addition was completed at St. Saviour's. The addition was dedicated by Bishop Nock. In 1982 substantial renovations were undertaken at St. Saviour's including repair of plaster, interior painting, an upgrade to the heating system, and the application of a new roof and siding. At the same time the rectory was remodeled and the parish hall was re-shingled.
