History Biographical: 

The Hon. Ray Stortini is a retired Justice of the Ontairo Superior Court of Justice. He holds a BA from the University of Western Ontario and an LLB from York University. Mr. Stortini spent his early years as a steel plant labourer, great lakes seaman and insurance adjuster. After graduating from law school, he had a general law practice and was also a Special Federal Prosecutor, as well as being the first Area Director of Legal Aid.

He was appointed a Judge of York County (Toronto) in 1971, appointed to the Algoma District Court in 1976 and then appointed a Justice of the Superior Court of Justice in 1990 a post he held until retirement in 2004. Mr. Stortini's past civic activities include being a member of City Council, Algoma Health Unit, Children's Aid Society, and a Trustee of the United Appeal Services.

His currently associated with the Soup Kitchen Community Centre, Sault Family YMCA, Ken Brown Alcohol Recovery Home and St. Joseph Island Lions Club. He is also a member of the St. Joseph Island Lions Club Cornfest Run Committee (Race Director for 15 years) and the Recreation Committee. He has been a member of the Algoma U Board of Governors and Senate since 2004.

Scope Content: 

Fonds comprises writings by Stortini, including "Only in Canada : Memories of an Italian Canadian" / by Ray Stortini (2006) and "Act 3 of Arrow to the Moon" / by Ray Stortini, which was performed by Cree students in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario and at the Premier's Performance of the 1967 Canadian National Exhibition.
