This note is written on birch bark and is very fragile. Tape has been removed from the note due to conservation concerns. Note reads: "Dear Mr Young, Re: Michael MacKay, Charlie Pepdbino. They have been playing softball for the Intermediate Boys Team (Queen Elizabeth School). They were dismissed at 5:25 pm from Anna McCrea School. Yours truly, J.F. Murphy

George Young was a guidance counselor and teacher at the Shingwauk Residential School from 1964-1968. In 1963 George Young was hired by Indian affairs as a teacher. He was initially employed in Tabik near Chapleau, Ont as a teacher. At the end of the school year in 1963 Young was transferred to Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario and began working as a teacher/counselor at Shingwauk.
In his role as a counselor Young provided remedial teaching services and took Shingwauk students to various industries and places in Sault Ste. Marie to expose students to culture and employment opportunities. Young also ran the evening homestudy program from 4:00-9:00 pm on weekday evenings. As a counselor Young took students on a number of field trips to such places as: Chippewa Falls, Hiawatha, Algoma Steel, and the 1967 Montreal Expo. Young was also involved in the Shingwauk "Arrow to the Moon" production and other extracurricular activities.
After leaving Shingwauk Young went on to marry Ella Visitor. Ella was a student of Shingwauk Indian Residential School however she was not at the School during Young's tenure. Ella and George met at a walk-a-thon and went on to have three children together. George participated in many of the Shingwauk Reunions and was an early supporter of the Shingwauk Project.

Fonds comprises records documenting activities at Shingwauk Indian Residential School. Fonds includes general photographs of staff and students and photographs relating to various theater productions performed by the students of Shingwauk.
There are interviews with George Young in the Shingwauk 1991 Reunion fonds and the Audio series of the Shingwauk Residential Schools Centre audio-visual collection.
