History Biographical: 

Algoma Steel Corporation is a steel producer located on the St. Mary's River in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario.  It was Founded by Francis Clergue and incorporated on 10 May 1901.  It was the largest project undertaken by the Lake Superior Power Company up to that time.  The company began with a structural mill and expanded into iron and steel-making.  Following World War II Algoma grew into a major integrated steel company.  Algoma was a pioneer in the basic oxygen steelmaking process and the project line expanded to include plate, hot and cold rolled sheet, unfinished parts and seamless tubular products.

The 1980s and 1990s were accompanied by economic downturns resulting in restructuring and reorganizing of Algoma Steel. restructured and reorganized. In October 1995 construction commenced on Algoma's Direct Strip Production Complex (DSPC), positioning Algoma as one of the leaders in the North American hot rolled sheet market.

In June 2007 Algoma was acquired by Essar Steel Holdings Ltd., a division of the multi-national conglomerate, Essar Global for $1.63 billion USD. Since this point operations have continued as a subsidiary known as Essar Steel Algoma Inc.
