Wilson, Edward Francis (1844-1915)

(7 December 1844 London, England - 11 May 1915 Victoria, B.C.). Grandson of Daniel Wilson, Bishop of Calcutta. Gentleman farmer at age 17. Educated at Huron College; Deacon: 1867 London, Priest: 1869 Huron; Sarnia Indian Reserve (1867-1871); Garden River (1871-1875 & summer of 1888); Founder and first principal of Shingwauk Industrial School for Indians (1873-1892) and Wawanosh School for Girls (1879). Bishop's Commissary (1875-1882); Examining Chaplain (1882-1885); Nominated for Bishop of Algoma (1882); Military Chaplain Second Riel Rebellion (1885) (sat in on the later trials); Rector of Salt Spring Island, B.C. (1893-1911); Retired to Santa Monica, California, (1911-1915); Buried at Ganges Harbour, B.C. Married: Francis Spooner. Editor: "The Peace Pipe", "Algoma Quarterly", "Algoma Missionary News and Shingwauk Journal" & "Our Forest Children". Compiled and Translated: "A Manual of the Ojibway Language", (1874 & 1975). Wrote: "Missionary Work Among the Ojibway", (1886).

Bead work in this series was collected by the family of Reverend E.F. Wilson, principal at Shingwauk Indian Residential School and Archibald Wilson, Principal of Elkhorn, Residential School, Washakada.

The bead work is most likely from the late 1800s. Mrs. Graham, a descendant of E.F. Wilson, graciously donated the bead work to the Shingwauk Project. She said, "I want these to go back to where they belong".

Scope Content: 

Series comprises handmade beadwork objects. Series includes necklaces, moccasins, pouches, and other material.
