Pelican Lake Indian Residential School (Sioux Lookout, Ont.)

Pelican Lake Indian Residential School, Sioux Lookout, ON, [Sioux Lookout Indian Residential School,] 1926-1978, Diocese of Keewatin, Authorized Enrollment – 135 to 160. Compiled by General Synod Archives July 24, 2008.

  • 1969 Apr. 1 Ottawa takes over full management of school with most Anglican staff (non-teaching) staying on and becoming government employees.
  • Early 1970s Government and First Nations groups open more day schools near reserves; some native communities are relocated as part of the process. Residential school enrolment declines as remaining boarders continue to attend day school in Sioux Lookout until schooling is available in their home communities.
  • 1978 Student hostel at Pelican Lake closes, following completion of roads north and west of Sioux Lookout, affording students better access to new day schools in areas close to their homes.

Principals at the Pelican Lake Indian Residential School included: Reverend John Frederick James Marshall (1926-1940), Reverend Alan Bellingham Cheales (1941-1946), Reverend George William Fisher (1946-1947), Reverend Douglas Charles Wickenden (1947-1949), Reverend Joseph Scott Wilson (1949-1954), Mr. Edgar S. Salmon [Ordained 1957] (1954-1956), Mr. Eric Luff Howland Barrington (1956-1961), Mr. James Frank Orman (1961-1963), Reverend Dr. Ahab Spence (1963-1965), Mr. John Donald Shepherd (1965-1970).
