St. James’ Anglican Church (Gravenhurst, Ontario) was rebuilt and open for service on September 30th, 1888, one year after a disastrous fire burnt it down. St. James’ is the parish church for the St. James’ Anglican Parish of Gravenhurst, Ontario and is, administratively, a part of the Deanery of Muskoka within the Diocese of Algoma.
The first Church of England service held in Gravenhurst was in 1865 and the officiating clergyman was the Rev. Mr. Jones of Orillia Township. For sometime he held service in a log shanty and in 1873 the first church was built. In 1880 this first building was torn down and a frame structure was erected on the present site. This second church was destroyed by fire in 1887 and replaced in 1888 by the present frame building veneered with brick.
The earliest church records (Baptisms) date back to 1884. The new church building was consecrated by the Bishop of Algoma on Sunday, December 23, 1888. The new building was built for a total cost of $2,215.00, which was greatly funded through future church offerings. The proactive incumbent at the time was the Reverend W. T. Noble.
In the Spring of 1957 a program of improvements was started at St. James Anglican Church (Gravenhurst, Ont.). The coal burning heating system was replaced by two oil furnaces, a new chimney was built, and the church exterior was painted. The church rectory also received considerable interior and exterior improvements.
