Beaven, James

born at Westloway, Surrey, England on the 9th of July 1801. Educated at Oxford University BA (1824) MA (1827) Divinity BD & DD (1842); Vicar of Welford in Northamptonshire. To Canada (1843). Professor of Divinity at King's College, Toronto (1843-1850); Professor of Metaphysics and Ethics at University of Toronto from (1850); SPG Missionary at Norway Mills, Diocese of Toronto. Visited Sault Ste. Marie and wrote: Recreations of a Long Vacation or a Visit to the Indian Missions of Upper Canada, 1846. Wrote the first philosophical work in Canada - "Elements of Natural Theology", (1850), arguing for the rational basis of belief - order in all things - a "defender of the citidel of truth". See: A.B. McKillop, "A Disciplined Intelligence", 1979. A James Beaven (son?) was appointed rector of St. Luke's, SSM, in 1899 but he refused the offer.
