History Biographical: 

Arthur Bear Chief is a a member of the Blackfoot band, in Gleichen Alberta. He was born to Walker and Martha Bear Chief on the Blackfoot Indian Reserve #146 on June 25, 1942.  He attended the Old Sun Indian Residential School in Gleichen from September 1, 1949 to  June 1959.  In 1960 he became employed part-time at the Old Sun Indian Residential School.

He also worked at the Shingwauk Indian Residential School from August 1963-1964 and 1966-1967. In 1966 Arthur was hired as the senior boys' supervisor at Shingwauk and he also started a judo club. Following his work at Shingwauk Arthur worked at Horden Hall in Moose Factory from 1968-1970.  Arthur was responsible for forming Judo clubs at the Shingwauk and Bishop Horden Schools. Arthur Bear Chief also taught gymnastics at the Shingwauk Indian Residential School.

During the 1970s Arthur Bear Chief began his career working for numerous government departments including the Alberta Human Rights Commission, the Public Service Commission of Canada, Corporate Affairs, Transport Canada, and Northern Affairs.

Scope Content: 

Collection comprises photographs of students at the Shingwauk Indian Residential School (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) and the Bishop Horden Residential School (Moose Fort, Ont.). Includes photographs of Shingwauk and Moose Factory school judo clubs, portraits of students, and photographs of buildings and activities.
