Historically, the Lloyd's Register Group (founded 1760) was specifically a maritime classification society, which printed its first Register of Ships in 1764 to give both underwriters and merchants an idea of the conditions of the vessels they ensured and chartered. The top classification for both hulls and equipment was A1.
