History Biographical: 

The Aboriginal Peoples’ Council (APC) has a collective responsibility to represent the needs, and aspirations of the Anishinaabe people and Anishinaabe students at Algoma University. The Council functions as a committee of the Board of Governors and oversees the development of Anishinaabe academic, research, and support services; long range and annual action plans; the hiring of personnel; the development and recommendations of policies for the management of Anishinaabe support services and programs; as well as monitoring these funding initiatives.

Local First Nations and Anishinaabe organizations are represented on the Anishinaabe Peoples’ Council, including: Batchewana First Nation, Garden River First Nation, North Shore Tribal Council, Indian Friendship Centre, Metis Nation of Ontario, Neech-ke-When Homes, SASA Student Representative, Children of Shingwauk Alumni Association, Historic SSM Métis Council, and Algoma University Anshinaabe Alumni.

The Aboriginal Peoples' Council (1994-2003) was renamed as the Indigenous Peoples' Council (2003-2006), and then the Anishinaabe People’s Council (2006-Present).

Fonds comprises records that document the activities of the Anishinaabe Peoples' Council and its predecessor bodies.  Includes meeting minutes, memos, correspondence, committee notes, and other material.

Custodial History: 

Material in accruals 2013-100 and  were 2014-059 collected by the Children of Shingwauk Alumni Association during their involvement in APC. Accrual 2018-031 was transferred to the Algoma Unviersity Archives on June 7, 2018 by the Anishinaabe Initatives Division.
