Accession comprises photograph of staff, students, and activities at Shingwauk Indian Residential School during the 1950s.
Materials in this accession correspond to the tenure of Rev. Roy Philips as the principal of the Shingwauk Residential School. They were collected by the Shingwauk Project and previously known as the Roy Philips collection and part of the principals collection.
Roy Phillips was born in St. John's Newfoundland and studied at Dalhousie and King's Universities in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He was ordained in the Anglican Church in 1935. In 1954, Rev. Roy Phillips became the principal at Shingwauk Indian Residential School. Phillips remained principal at Shingwauk until 1965.
During his tenure as principal of Shingwauk the Canadian residential school system changed drastically. The Canadian Government introduced a policy of 'integration' of students into regular elementary and high schools. During this time Shingwauk became a residence for junior pupils.
Prior to his role at the Shingwauk home Rev. Phillips served his curacy at Christ Church, Dartmoth, Nova Scotia before becoming Rector of Mahone Bay. He was a Chaplin for five years during World War II and served as rector of Seaforth and Windsor Nova Scotia. He left Shingwauk to become the rector of Petite Rivere, Nova Scotia. He passed away in 1983.
