Rev. Cannon Charles F. Hives was principal of the Shingwauk Residential School from 1929 to 1942. Charles F. Hives was married to Jean Hives (nee Royston). They had two children Arthur Royston Hives and Jean (Hives) Purvis.
Rev. Cannon Hives worked for 44 years as a missionary principal in the Anglican Church at Residential Schools across Canada. In 1915 he started as a missionary principal at Lac La Ronge and Fort Stanley on the Church Hill River in Saskatchewan. He served as a missionary principal in this region for 15 years before moving to the Shingwauk Home (Sault Ste Marie, Ont.). While principal of the Shingwauk Home he persuaded the Department of Indian Affairs to build a new school to replace the aging, dilapidated original school building. His method of persuasion involved calling in the medical health officer, sanitary inspector, fire chief, and the grand jury of the district to inspect and report on the condition of the school.
In 1941 Cannon Hives took over as principal of St. George's Indian Residential School (Lytton, B.C.). He retired from his work as a missionary principal on June 30, 1959.
