History Biographical:

The Office of the Principal was created in 1966. It was the first administrative position created and hired in for Algoma University College, followed by the Registrar and the Librarian. The Office of the Principal combined the academic functions, now exercised by the Office of the Academic Dean (1984-) as well as the functions of a Chief Executive Officer, which are now held by the Office of the President (1984- ). On the recommendation of Commissioner John Whiteside, QC, of the Royal Commission of Inquiry on Algoma University College (1976-1977) the Office of the Principal and the original Board of Directors to which the position reported were dissolved. The Principal's administrative functions passed to Dr. D. G. Howell, Chair of the newly appointed Board of Trustee from 1977 to 1978. In 1978, another Trustee and full-time AUC faculty member, Dr. Robert G. Ewing was appointed Dean to handle the executive and academic functions formerly carried out by the Principal. In 1984, AUC's administration was reorganized; the Office of the President was created to carry out the functions of a chief executive officer and the Office of the Academic Dean was created to execute the academic functions of the college. The following individuals have held the responsibilities of Principal for Algoma University College (1966-1977): The Reverend Charles A. Krug (1966-1968), Dr. Ian W. Brown (1968-1973) [acting], Dr. Francis R. Guth (1974-1975) [acting], and Dr. Donald Watkins (1975-1977).
