History Biographical: 

The Reverend Roy Philips (-1983) was an Anglican priest and Principal at the Shingwauk (Anglican) Indian Residential School from 1954 to 1964.  He was born in St. John’s Newfoundland and studies at Dalhousie and King’s Universities in Halifax.  He was ordained deacon in 1935.  He married his wife Irene on April 12, 1939 at King’s College Chapel. 

He served in five parishes in Nova Scotia, and was a Canadian army chaplain before working at Shingwauk as principal from 1954-1964,  In 1965 Phillips returned to Nova Scotia to accept the incumbency of the Parish of Petite Riviere; he also served in the Parish of St. John, Halifax.  He passed away in 1983.

Scope Content: 

Fonds comprises a single memoir of Rev. Phillips' principalship at the Shingwauk Indian Residential School (1954-1964).  The memoir was compiled by his wife, Irene Philips in 1956.
