History Biographical:

Claire Martin was born July 9, 1919 in Biscotasing, Ontario to parents Mary (Kittie) Martin and John Martin.  At the age of two her family home suffered a devastating fire and resulted in her family moving to Mattagami First Nation.  At age four or five Claire was sent to the Shingwauk Indian Residential School in Sault Ste Marie.

Upon arrival at Shingwauk Claire was billeted with Rev. Hives and his family instead of in the girls dorm.  After completing her grade eight at Shingwauk Claire stayed on to work as an attendant and a kitchen helper.  In the 1940s Claire left Sault Ste Marie for Ottawa where she was promised work through family connections of the Hives.  While in Ottawa Claire met Gerald Barnaby, who she claimed was the "love of her life."  Six months before the end of World War II Gerald died during his military service.

On December 16, 1948 Claire gave birth to a baby boy, Gerald Victor Martin, named after her wartime sweetheart.  Claire's single mother status forced her to be separated from her newborn child temporarily until she found a stable job and support network. Claire went on to marry Walter G. Shaw in 1960 who she met through correspondence in a Christian news magazine. In the fall of 1987 Walter passes away from a heart attack.  In 1988 Claire passed away while living in senior's care home.
