History Biographical: 

Dorothy Martin Currie (1929-2015) grew up in Kanshsatake First Nation.   She attended the Shingwauk Residential School from 1937 to 1948, from age seven to nineteen, from grade 1 to grade 13.  Dorothy's siblings Evelyn, Eugene, Pearl, Mary, and Andrew also attended the Shingwauk Residential School. 

When Dorothy left Shingwauk in 1948 she began substitute teaching in Sioux Lookout and enrolled in the North Bay Normal School.  Upon graduation from Normal School she joined the teaching staff at the Pelican Lake Indian Residential School in Sioux Lookout. In 1950, with a scholarship from the Department of Indian Affairs Dorothy entered the Metropolitan School of Nursing in Windsor, Ontario.  She graduated as an RN in 1953.  Dorothy had two children and six grandchildren.  She lived in California for a number of years but returned to Canada in 2000.

Scope Content: 

Fonds comprises photographs and textual records relating to the Shingwauk Indian Residential School. Photographs include students, staff, and buildings. Textual records include written accounts of experiences at the Shingwauk Indian Residential School.
