Beginning in the late 1950s students from the Shingwauk Indian Residential School were sent to local high schools in Sault Ste Marie. At this time the Shingwauk Residential School became primarily a student residence.

In 1909 it was decided that Sault Ste Marie Ontario needed a technical training program. As a result a technical wing a The Sault Collegiate Institute. As the demand for this training increased, in 1922 the Sault technical and Commercial High School was established. In 1969, the school changed from purely a technical and commercial school to a composite school. The name also changed from Sault Technical and Commercial High School to Lakeway Collegiate and Vocational School.

Sault Ste Marie Collegiate Institute was a public secondary school in Sault Ste Marie. It opened in 1902 as Sault Collegiate High School and closed around 1980. The Collegiate Heights Retirement Residence exists on the site currently (2011).

Sir James Dunn Collegiate and Vocational School opened as Sault Ste Marie's third high school in 1957. The school was named after Sir James Hamet Dunn (October 29, 1874-January 1, 1956). Dunn was instrumental in developing iron and ore mines in the Michipicoten Range, including Algoma Steel.
The Sir James Dunn school is slated to close in June 2011.
