Shingwauk Education Trust (SET) was founded by a vision of an Ojibwe, Chief Shingwauk; to create a “Teaching Wigwam”, with an overall goal of providing education to Anishinaabe students. The Shingwauk Education Trust recognized the need to work with the communities and to ensure programs were developed like the First Nations Access Program to improve student retention and student graduate rates.
The aims of SET include :
1) To provide opportunities for the educational development of Anishinaabe people and other students of native heritage.
2) To deliver educational, social, cultural, and economic development programs designed to advance aboriginal people.
3) To initiate cooperative educational programs of cross-cultural education between Anishinaabe people and others.
Since its establishment, SET has been been involved and coordinated a number of community based healing and education projects.
In May 2006, SET and Algoma University established Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig, also known as Shingwauk University, an independent and degree-granting post secondary institution. The Shingwauk Covenant states that Anishinaabe, Canadian and International staff and students must learn to respect and understand each other's knowledge and cultural differences.
Fonds comprises records documenting the administration of the Shingwauk Education Trust (SET). Fonds includes correspondence, meeting minutes, funding proposals, project documentation and other material.
