Reverend Noel L. Goater was principal at the Shingwauk Indian Residential School from 1968-1970. Noel came to Canada in 1954. From 1954-1957 he attended Emmanuel Theological Seminary in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. After marring his wife, Jenann, Noel Goater and Jennan began to work in the Residential School system. They worked in Residential Schools for 13 years. They worked in Residential Schools in Moose Factory, Gleichen, Punnichy, Old Sun, and Sault Ste Marie. In 1968 Noel was chosen as President of the National Association of Principals and Administrators of Indian Residences. From 1980-1987 Rev. Noel Goater was the Dean at St. Matthew's Cathedral in Brandon Manitoba. Noel served on the National Executive Council of the Anglican church and on the board of the Anglican Journal. Noel and Jenann had two boys, Tim and Cam.

Chief Shingwaukonse (1773-1854), also known as Chief Shingwauk and Little Pine, was a chief of the Garden River Ojibways. Shingwauk, was born south of Lake Superior and moved to Garden River Ontario in 1836. He rose to prominence fighting in the war of 1812. In 1935, he converted to the Church of England, as did two of his sons, Augustine and Buhkwujjenene. However, Native beliefs continued to inform his life. Shingwaukonse traveled in 1832 to York to petition Sir John Colborne , lieutenant-governor of Upper Canada, for a school for his people. From 1827-1854 he developed a new native rights and self-determination strategy which envisioned "Teaching Wigwams" throughout Anishnabek lands to provide an European style education. His vision was carried on by his sons, Augustin (1800-1890), Buhkwujjenene (1811-1900), John Askin (1863-1919), and George Menissino (1839-1923). In his later years Shingwaukonse became a leading advocate of Native resource rights, including access to revenues from mining and logging on Aboriginal lands.

Rector Charles F. Hives was principal of the Shingwauk Residential School from 1929 to 1942. Charles F. Hives was married to Jean Hives (nee Royston). They had two children: Arthur Royston Hives and Jean (Hives) Purvis. Charles Hives also worked as a principal at St. George's Indian Residential School in Lytton British Columbia and the All Saints Indian Residential School in Lac La Ronge, Saskatchewan (?-1929)

Donald M. MacGregor moved from Toronto to Sault Ste Marie when he was 14. Don played high school basketball with the Collegiate Wildcats. He later played softball with the Soo Monarchs in the late 1950s and 1960s. Don refereed high school basketball and was a volunteer basketball coach with the YMCA and at Shingwauk Hall. Don was Mayor of Sault Ste Marie from 1980 to 1985. In 1990 Don ran as the Liberal Party candidate in the provincial election. MacGregor ultimately lost the race by 697 to the NDP candidate Tony Martin. Don MacGregor and his wife Dawna have had four children: Murray, Nancy, David, and Robert. All of their children except Robert still live in Sault Ste Marie. Don is retired from Algoma Steel.

Margaret Lulu Botterall was a Matron at the Shingwauk Indian Residential School from 1914-1935. Margaret was a life member of the Anglican Woman's Auxiliary. Margaret died February 9, 1938 and is buried in the Shingwauk Memorial cemetery.

Joyce Clinton was a staff member at the Pelican Lake Indian Residential School.

Mr. George Ley King was principal of the Shingwauk Residential School from 1896-1909.

Benna Fuller (1888-1977) is the daughter of Ben and Mary Ann Fuller. Benna Fuller died at St. Joseph's Hospital, Little Current, on Thursday January 27, 1977. Benna was buried at the Shingwauk cemetery. Benna Fuller's father, Reverend Benjamin P. Fuller (1865-1945) was the principal of the Shingwauk and Wawanosh Indian Residential Schools from 1909-1929. Benjamin was born in England and settled at St. Joseph's Island, Ontario when he arrived in Canada. He was ordained as deacon in 1902 and spent many years working as a missionary with the Lake Nipigon Indians. He was ordained as a priest in 1906. In 1909 he began working as the principal of the Shingwauk and Wawanosh Homes. From 1929 to 1940 Fuller was in charge of the Silverwater mission. In 1940 he began working with the Garden River Reserve. In 1944, he was installed as a canon of St. Luke's Pro-Cathedral. Ben retired in 1945 and returned to Silver Water. Ben passed away on December 7th 1945 and is buried in the Shingwauk cemetery. Mary Ann Fuller (1866-1955) was born in England and moved to St. Joseph with Ben Fuller. Mary Ann and Ben Fuller married 28 May 1886 in Hilton, Algoma District. She was an assistant matron at Shingwauk and Wawanosh. She is also buried in the Shingwauk cemetery.
