History Biographical: 
The Children's Aid Society (CAS) of Algoma was established in 1902 as the "Humane Society of Sault Ste. Marie." In 1912 CAS purchased the Wawanosh Home, which was previously a residential school for Aboriginal girls. The Wawanosh Home was transformed into a shelter. The CAS was incorporated in Sault Ste. Marie on February 18, 1937. At the time, the Society was registered as the Children’s Aid Society of Sault Ste. Marie and District of Algoma. In 1987 the Society’s Board of Directors endorsed the following Mission Statement: The purpose of the Children’s Aid Society is to protect the children of Algoma in a manner which reflects the community’s standards and the intent of related legislation while recognizing the Society’s human and financial limitations. The Board of Directors also decided to change the Society’s name to the Children’s Aid Society of Algoma” on March 6, 1987. In 1990, the mission statement of CAS was changed to reflect the multi-service nature of the Society's programs.

The 1981 Shingwauk reunion was the first of a number of reunions of the the students, staff, clergy, and descents of those involved with the Shingwauk and Wawanosh Indian Residential Schools. The three day reunion saw 350-450 participants gather for homecoming and renewal. The reunion was organized through the efforts of the Shingwauk Project and what would become the Children of Shingwauk Alumni Association (CSAA). The reunion was held at the former Shingwauk school in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario. The reunion aimed to help facilitate healing, communication, and a growing support network of survivors. Shingwauk reunions were held again in 1991, 1996, 2000, 2002, and 2006.

The 1991 Shingwauk reunion was the second of a number of reunions of the students, staff, clergy, and descendants of those involved with the Shingwauk and Wawanosh Indian Residential Schools. The 1991 reunion also marked the 160th Anniversary of Chief Shingwauk's Vision. This four day reunion brought participants from as far away as Elkhorn Indian Residential School. The reunion was organized through the efforts of the Shingwauk Project and what would become the Children of Shingwauk Alumni Association (CSAA). The reunion was held at the former Shingwauk school in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario. The reunion aimed to help facilitate healing, communication, and a growing support network of survivors. Shingwauk reunions were also held in 1981, 1996, 2000, 2002, 2006, and 2011.

The 2006 Shingwauk reunion was one of the many reunions of the the students, staff, clergy, and descents of those involved with the Shingwauk and Wawanosh Indian Residential Schools. This reunion was hosted by Algoma University in conjunction with the National Residential School Survivors Society (NRSSS). Over 700 attended this three day event. The event was titled “A Journey of Healing and Rebuilding for Eastern Canada" and occurred August 4th, 5th and 6th, 2006. The reunion was organized through the efforts of the Shingwauk Project and the Children of Shingwauk Alumni Association (CSAA). The reunion was held at the former Shingwauk school in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario. The reunion aimed to help facilitate healing, communication, and a growing support network of survivors. Shingwauk reunions were also held in 1981, 1991, 1996, 2000, 2002, and 2011.

The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) developed out of the National Indian Brotherhood (NIB) which was established in 1968. The NIB was established by the status and treaty aboriginal groups in Canada as a means of creating a unified organization to confront the Canadian government regarding injustices committed against aboriginals. From 1969 to the present the National Indian Brotherhood has became a lobby group for aboriginal rights in Canada under the leadership of individuals such as George Manuel, Walter Dieter, Noel Starblanket, Delbert Riley, Dr. David Ahenakew, Georges Erasmus, Ovide Mercredi, Phil Fontaine, Matthew Coon Come. In 1982 the NIB made the transition into the Assembly of First Nations (AFN). The AFN was established as an 'Organization of First Nations Government Leaders.' The AFN became the secretariat, or administrative body, to the newly formed Assembly of First Nations. With the change in structure, First Nation government leaders were able to directly formulate and administer the policies of the Assembly of First Nations. In the 1980s and 1990s the AFN was actively involved with Aboriginal rights, including areas such as: he Meech Lake Accord of 1987, the Charolettown Accord of 1992, and the Free Trade deal with the United States.

History Biographical: 
The Aboriginal Healing Foundation (AHF), an Aboriginal managed organization, was established in 1998. The AHF was established as a not-for-profit organization with a one time grant of $350 million dollars from the Canadian government. The AHF has encouraged and and supported Aboriginal directed healing initiatives relating to the legacy of Canada's Indian Residential School System. The AHF has worked as facilitators in the healing process by helping Aboriginal people and their communities help themselves, by providing resources, promoting awareness, and taking a holistic approach to healing. The AHF's mandate runs to September 2012, at which point the Foundation will disband as no additional funds have been committed to AHF.

Algoma University College fonds

History Biographical: 
Algoma University is a post-secondary institution in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario, Canada. Algoma University College officially opened in September 1967 as an affiliated college of Laurentian University in Sudbury Ontario. Algoma University College opened on the campus of Cambrian College (later Sault), it was limited to offering the first year of studies for Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degree programs. In 1970 the Shingwauk Residential school closed. In 1971, Algoma University College and the newly formed Keewatinug Anishinabe Institute (later known as Shingwauk University) relocated to the Shingwauk site. In 1972 the college began to offer full three-year BAs and BSc programs. Algoma's independence from Laurentian was proposed in 1994. On May 31, 2007 Ontario government introduced legislation to charter Algoma as a fully independent college. On June 18, 2008 this legislation was ratified and Algoma University received Royal Assent making the University completely independently. Algoma University has developed as a university with a special mission for Aboriginal cross-cultural research and education. The results of this mission can be seen in the University's community partners, the establishment of the Residential School Research Centre, and ongoing interaction with Aboriginal communities. Former names: Algoma College and Algoma University College.
