IRSRC was established to centralize and focus federal efforts to resolve residential school claims. IRSRC was involved with the planning and initial implementation of the Indian Residential School Settlement Agreement (IRSSA) which the Canadian government agreed upon in May 2006. The mandate of the IRSRC aimed to work with former students of residential schools, their families, other federal government departments, provincial and territorial governments, Aboriginal organizations, and religious groups on the implementation of the IRSSA and in support for healing and reconciliation. The mandate also maintained that claims will be resolved in a timely fashion using compassionate resolution methods. On June 1, 2008, IRSRC merged with INAC and became the Resolution Sector within INAC. The role the Resolution Sector is to develop the IRSSA and assist in the resolution of the residential school legacy.

His vision was carried on by his sons, Augustin (1800-1890), Buhkwujjenene (1811-1900), John Askin (1863-1919), and George Menissino (1839-1923).
