History Biographical:
Indian Residential Schools Resolution Canada (IRSRC) was established by order of council in June 4, 2001 as a department of the Canadian government. Prior to June 2001 IRSRC was known as the Residential Schools Unit and was part of the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC).
IRSRC was established to centralize and focus federal efforts to resolve residential school claims. IRSRC was involved with the planning and initial implementation of the Indian Residential School Settlement Agreement (IRSSA) which the Canadian government agreed upon in May 2006.
The mandate of the IRSRC aimed to work with former students of residential schools, their families, other federal government departments, provincial and territorial governments, Aboriginal organizations, and religious groups on the implementation of the IRSSA and in support for healing and reconciliation. The mandate also maintained that claims will be resolved in a timely fashion using compassionate resolution methods.
On June 1, 2008, IRSRC merged with INAC and became the Resolution Sector within INAC. The role the Resolution Sector is to develop the IRSSA and assist in the resolution of the residential school legacy.
