History Biographical:
Founders' Day was established in 1980 to celebrate and remember the rich history of the Algoma University (College) site and the numerous partners who have been active in the carrying on the vision of Chief Shingwauk. The celebration was timed to coincide with Thanksgiving and the Anishinaabe Feast of the Dead celebration, and has been historically celebrated the day after Thanksgiving. In the late 1980s a policy was created by Algoma University recognizing the day, but official celebrations were irregular.
Celebrations typically have involved participants from Algoma University, Shingwauk University, the Children of Shingwauk Alumni Association, the Anglican Church, Garden River, and other other local supportive organizations. Founders' Day celebrations were held in 1992, 1997, and 2011. Founders' Day is currently marked by a day without classes at Algoma University and commemorative events on campus.
