Welcome to Archives & Special Collections

On March 25, 2011, Mr. David Mazzuca gave a generous donation of $50,000 in honour of the memory of his great-grandmother, Engracia De Jesus Matias.

Mr. Mazzuca's donation supports Algoma University's archives and special collections, part of Arthur A Wishart Library. In recognition of this donation, the archives and special collections was renamed the Engracia De Jesus Matias Archives and Special Collections.

Living History at a Canadian University

The original Shingwauk Hall (pictured) on the Algoma University campus, was first established in 1873 as a residential school for First Nations children, and operated as such until Shingwauk Residential School closed in 1970. The second Shingwauk Hall (1934) building is one of the oldest landmarks in the Sault Ste. Marie area.

Shingwauk Hall

The second Shingwauk Hall (pictured) on the Algoma University campus, was built in 1934, replacing the original 1873 building. It continued to operate as a residential school for First Nations children until the Shingwauk Indian Residential School closed in 1970. The building is one of the oldest landmarks in the Sault Ste. Marie area.

With the support of The Children of Shingwauk Alumni Association and Algoma University, the history and activities associated with Shingwauk Hall are being gathered under the auspices of the Shingwauk Residential School Centre and stored in the University Archives.

What we offer

The staff of the Arthur A. Wishart Library, Engracia de Jesus Mathias Archives & Special Collections and the Shingwauk Residential Schools Centre provide access to over 200 distinct and complementary collections in person and online. Areas of strength include church history, local and regional history, labour history and especially the Indian Residential Schools legacies. Staff possess a wide range of technical, technological and educational programming skills. Special attention is given to healing, sharing and learning in the context of the Residential Schools legacies for all Canadians.

Welcome to Archives & Special Collections

Algoma University has developed its archival and special collections materials through the generosity of donors in and from the Algoma region. We also encourage donations of papers, photographs, ephemera, books, audio-visual material, and other items that are related directly to Algoma University. This includes items from faculty, staff, students, and alumni, as well as persons in the community, institutions and associations.
